Minnesota Medicaid covers GLP-1s for weight loss
Minnesota is one of just 13 states whose Medicaid program covers GLP-1 medications for the obesity indication. Coverage is typically behind prior authorization, so your prescriber will need to document that you meet the state's criteria. You may pay little or nothing for the drug if you qualify. Who qualifies for Medicaid in Minnesota
Minnesota has expanded Medicaid, so adults earning up to about 138% of the federal poverty level generally qualify for the program.
The diabetes route in Minnesota
The coverage above is the weight-loss (obesity) indication. Like nearly every state, Minnesota Medicaid also covers GLP-1s for type-2 diabetes, a separate and broader pathway if you have that diagnosis. This is policy reporting, not medical advice.
What Minnesota's Medicaid drug list says
Minnesota Health Care Programs (Medical Assistance) covers anti-obesity medications, including GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, with prior authorization. Per the official MHCP/DHS "Anti-Obesity Medications" PA criteria page (March 2023): Initial approval requires a qualifying baseline BMI (>= 30 kg/m2 with no risk factors, or lower thresholds with risk factors), no concurrent use of other weight-loss drugs, and no contraindications unless the prescriber documents benefits outweigh risks. Initial approval is 6 months for Saxenda, Wegovy, Contrave, Xenical, or orlistat, renewable if renewal criteria are met. Renewal criteria: patients at least 18 must show at least 5% weight loss during the initial approval period, or patients 12-17 must show at least 5% reduction in baseline BMI; plus documentation of an ongoing reduced-calorie diet OR ongoing care of a registered dietitian nutritionist, plus documentation of initiation of or ongoing increased physical activity (unless medically contraindicated by co-morbidity), and no contraindications.

On Medicare in Minnesota?
Traditional Medicare has generally not covered GLP-1s for weight loss alone. But a federal Medicare GLP-1 "Bridge" demonstration starts July 1, 2026, roughly $50/month for Wegovy or Zepbound for obesity, in participating plans. Coverage can also apply when the drug is prescribed for a covered condition such as heart disease. This is national, so it applies to Minnesota residents on Medicare the same as anywhere else.
How to get GLP-1 in Minnesota
