New Jersey Medicaid does not cover GLP-1s for weight loss
As of April 2026, New Jersey Medicaid does not cover GLP-1 medications for the obesity indication, like most states (only 13 do). Important exception: if you have type-2 diabetes, Medicaid coverage of GLP-1s is far broader and New Jersey likely covers it for that diagnosis.

New Jersey has expanded Medicaid, so adults earning up to about 138% of the federal poverty level generally qualify for the program.
The diabetes route in New Jersey
New Jersey Medicaid does not cover GLP-1s for weight loss, but like nearly every state it covers them for type-2 diabetes. If you have type-2 diabetes or prediabetes, ask your clinician whether a GLP-1 fits that diagnosis. This is policy reporting, not medical advice.
What New Jersey's Medicaid drug list says
On the NJ Medicaid fee-for-service Preferred Drug List (effective May 1, 2026), GLP-1 receptor agonists appear only under the diabetes class "Incretin Mimetic Agents (GLP-1 Receptor Agonists)": liraglutide (Victoza) and Ozempic (0.25/0.5, 1, and 2 mg doses), each marked "PA; QL" (prior authorization required plus quantity limits). No dedicated weight-loss/anti-obesity GLP-1 products (Wegovy, Zepbound, Saxenda, Mounjaro) appear on this FFS PDL, and no separate obesity-indication coverage criterion is stated. Note: this is the FFS PDL; most NJ FamilyCare members are in managed-care MCOs that may apply additional or different GLP-1 rules.

On Medicare in New Jersey?
Traditional Medicare has generally not covered GLP-1s for weight loss alone. But a federal Medicare GLP-1 "Bridge" demonstration starts July 1, 2026, roughly $50/month for Wegovy or Zepbound for obesity, in participating plans. Coverage can also apply when the drug is prescribed for a covered condition such as heart disease. This is national, so it applies to New Jersey residents on Medicare the same as anywhere else.
